Luminous plankton, the natural wonder hidden in Barú

During the day, visitors can enjoy the white sand and crystal clear water of the Caribbean Sea, but at night a phenomenon occurs «luminous plankton» almost unique that can be seen in few places on the globe, in which the sea is dyed in colors and shapes that seem to be from another planet.

A short distance from Barú is the archipelago of Rosario Islands, and has a peculiarity, the presence of the so-called «luminous plankton» that attracts the attention of hundreds of tourists at night.

The agglomeration of these plants forms a luminous plankton that under the sun's rays is imperceptible, but in the dark it causes bluish flashes that are activated by the natural movement of the water.

The phenomenon occurs due to the presence of an alga called Noctiluca scintillans, also known as "sea spark", which is responsible for causing these light flashes.

Between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m., we will pick you up at your hotel in Bocagrande, Laguito, Castillo Grande or the Cartagena Convention Center, and then we will travel to the paradisiacal Playa Blanca in Barú and return at 8:30 p.m.

Where we are going to go is called the Portonaito swamp. The conditions of the place make them see very clearly; It has a single entrance where the currents are very strong and push the plankton inside. It is surrounded by mangroves that produce more oxygen than any other tree; the maximum depth is between two and three meters, and the water temperature is between 27 and 30 degrees centigrade. All these conditions make us see so many plankton.
